FAQ
Korean age (세/살) is a traditional age-counting system where everyone starts at age 1 at birth (not 0) and gains a year on January 1st each year, not on their actual birthday. This means a Korean person can be up to 2 years older than their international age.
Subtract your birth year from the current year, then add 1. For example, if you were born in 1995 and the current year is 2026, your Korean age is 2026 − 1995 + 1 = 32.

Intl. (만 나이): lower number before this year's birthday, higher after.
만 나이 is the official legal age system in South Korea as of June 2023. It is equivalent to the international (Western) age — counting from birth with birthdays as the increment point. All official documents in Korea now use 만 나이.
Year age is the current year minus your birth year, with no birthday involved. South Korea still uses it where everyone born in the same year should be treated alike: military service, and the legal age for alcohol and tobacco, which starts on January 1 of the year you turn 19.
The Korean zodiac (띠) follows the Chinese 12-year cycle: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Your zodiac is determined by your birth year, cycling every 12 years.
Korean generational labels broadly align with global ones: Baby Boomers (born 1946–1964), Gen X (1965–1980), Millennials (1981–1996), Gen Z / MZ Generation (1997–2012), and Gen Alpha (2013–present). The MZ generation (combining Millennials and Gen Z) is a popular term in Korean media.
Yes. South Korea officially changed its legal age system to 만 나이 (international age) in June 2023. Previously, the traditional Korean age (세) was used in daily life and the formal "year age" (연 나이) was used for some legal purposes. The traditional age is still used informally in daily conversation.
